We’re in the middle of summer and you’re trying your best to keep your family cool in your home. Central air conditioning units are a great investment for the home and it’s not fun living without the comforts we commonly take for granted. Keeping up with your central air unit is an important part of home ownership. Malfunctions can happen around any corner, and sometimes it’s hard to know why they’ve happened. So, what does it mean when your AC starts to blow hot air? There’s a variety of issues that could be causing the AC to suddenly stop cooling, and start heating things up!
The most common reason your AC starts blowing hot air? Someone accidentally changed the thermostat to “heat.” We know it sounds silly, but double check your thermostat before calling us in to inspect, just to make sure that the AC is set to cool and at a comfortable temperature. If your thermostat is set to “on” the fan will blow regardless of if the AC is actively cooling your home. It’s always a good idea to be mindful of how your AC settings affect the temperature in your home.
Refrigerant is a transfer liquid, so it works to absorb the heat in your air and return cool air to the ventilation. So, you guessed it, if you’re low on refrigerant you risk the chance of having an A/C incapable of cooling your home! Refrigerant doesn’t get used up like gas, instead for it to be low, you likely have a leak. There are a couple easy ways to figure out if you’re facing a leak, like if the refrigerant line is frozen, there’s a bubbling noise, or if you’re blowing cool air at night and hot air during the day. This requires a professional technician to come out and repair the unit, so give us a call if you suspect an issue!
You could also be feeling a bit of heat from your vents if your unit is facing restricted air flow. If there’s not enough air being pushed through the vents in your home, it’s a good idea to inspect the air filter. If you haven’t replaced it in a long time, it could be negatively affecting the air flow in your home. The other reason you could end up with restricted air flow is that the coils to your unit are dirty. Make sure that the outside portion of your central air unit is clear of debris, and schedule unit maintenance at least once a year to prevent this!
